There are two main types of sampling solutions:

  • Sachets
  • Thermoformed doses

In the current presentation we will focus on the thermoformed doses and their environmental impact and how you can make them eco-friendly

KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Learn about the current market context of thermoformed samples
  • Understand how the thermoformed process is carried out
  • To gain knowledge about the different applications and shapes of samples
  • To learn about the ‘green dose’

01 - The market

HOW THE HEALTH CRISIS IMPACTED SAMPLING

Testing was being challenged or even stopped in stores during the global health crisis, a lot of brands have reverted to sampling “sheets” where consumers would pick a sample at point of sale to try product at home.

Previously for make-up, brands would show, multiple colours in one small sampling palettes, however, in recent months they opted for single dose to give away to consumers in store, instead of in-store testing. Small doses offer affordable pricing for brands and are quick to manufacture.

Alongside the replacement of in-store testing, premium sampling has also increased in the recent months to allow brand to keep interacting with and reaching consumers

02 - How does thermoforming works

► Few limits, multitude of possibilities

Thermoforming consists of taking a plastic sheet and giving it a certain shape thanks to a mould by heating it at a very high temperature so that it becomes malleable. As it cools, it hardens and takes the desired shape.

This technique makes it possible to produce simple but also complex shapes. Moreover, it has few limits. Almost all sizes, shapes and colours are allowed.

In contrast to injection moulding, thermoforming makes it easier and quicker to produce serial parts. This is due to a much simpler tool design and manufacture. It is also a very competitive technique, which therefore offers very competitive prices.
