CyR.U.S is enhancing accessibility with QR codes

Eva Lagarde

Following on the creation of CyR.U.S, two years after the launch of VictoriaLand Beauty, a brand dedicated to making beauty more accessible with a specific coding system on the packaging, Victoria Watts founder wanted to spread her ideas across the industry and developed the CyR.U.S system into a universally available technology through stickers and QR codes.

What about CyR.U.S

The CyR.U.S. team did extensive user-centred research, including interviews and observations to fully understand the needs of those with low vision, and worked closely with a foundation in Florida (The Lighthouse Foundation in the Collier County, Florida Chapter).

After dozens of prototypes and tests with users to ensure comprehension, performance, symbol size and depth and 2 years of proof of concept using the VictoriaLand Beauty products, the concept was born.

A new symbol system to differentiate Beauty products from one another through embossed stickers. The Touch Tags are across self-care, home care and skincare. Each Touch Tag Kit comes with two sets of symbols that are waterproof and durable.

Enhanced Accessibility with QR Codes

Following on feedback within the industry, from users and brands, the CyR.U.S team has been inspired to make meaningful enhancements to both our technology and product offerings.

They have added a small QR code beneath each tactile symbol, offering users an audible description of the symbol and the product it identifies. This simplifies the user experience:

  • Locate the tactile symbol.
  • Open the camera on any device and point it at the QR code.
  • Instantly access audible product information.

This improvement removes the need for embossed QR codes, which were challenging to implement on individual tags. The streamlined system makes it even easier for users to learn the CyR.U.S. language while remaining practical for brands to adopt.

Customisable Solutions for Brands

For brands not yet ready to redesign their packaging, they now offer custom-branded Touch Tag kits and a tailored user experience (UX).

This approach provides an accessible and cost-effective entry point for integrating CyR.U.S. into their product offerings.

CyR.U.S. Certification & Collaboration Programs (CCP

Since September 2023 they have launched the CyR.U.S. Certification and Collaboration Programs (CCP) to support brands in making their packaging accessible. These programs provide:

  • Guidelines and best practices.
  • Application methods and preferred vendor connections.
  • Testing processes for accessibility compliance.
  • Collaboration Opportunities to further develop the CyRUS language.

They have been in discussions with several brands, including some major players, who are eager to lead the charge in their respective categories. They plan to announce the CCP formally by year-end, along with the names of our early adopter brands.

The new and improved Touch Tags and Kits are set to launch in early 2025. With accessibility being hailed as the next frontier in beauty, CyR.U.S have a unique opportunity to empower brands while transforming the lives of those who depend on accessible packaging.
