Sustainable Beauty Innovations - Packaging & Formulations (EN)
As we are starting 2024 with a dash, we are releasing a report on all the innovations seen in 2023 in Ingredients and Formulation as well as packaging.
We have identified 5 main trends in Ingredients & Formulations :
- Upcycling
- Not a new concept but a growing one. Similar to waste used in packaging, waste is being captured from other industry and from beauty itself to be re-incorporated into beauty itself. From fruit peels and other to make juice for instance, waste are full amazing actives that deserve a second use.
- Functional Ingredients
- Waterless Beauty
- Waterless beauty is gaining a new level of innovation with fascinating format. From the advent of syndets (solid bars) in recent years we are entering the realm of playful waterless beauty with 3D printed, coloured flakes, or dried bubbles for instance
- Polymer switch
- Biotechnologies
- Biotech is invading beauty and for good reasons. From research and development on algae, bacteria, mushroom, or others, possibilities are infinite and sky is not event to limit.

Formulation Innovation Supply side - with Linodermine
Extracted from french organic linseed, Linodermine delivers an instant glow and long-term anti-ageing benefits. Rich in natural sugars (xylose and rhamnose), this multifunctional active stimulates crucial biological markers: collagen, elastin, decorin, and hyaluronic acid synthesis. Compatible with gels and emulsion formulations.
Why it’s interesting/sustainable: The patented eco-designed extraction process (UltraSevum™) which combines ultrasonics and phytosolvents. Tree sap is used as an extraction fluid to replace organic solvents, offering a more natural (and active) alternative.

We have identified 3 main trends in Packaging:
- Refill Augmented
- in the first move to sustainability suppliers and brands moved their offering from single-use to refillable solutions. We find that in 2023 and moving into 2024, refillable solutions are more intuitive, design go a bit deeper and are probably more adapted to consumers' expectations. So from simple moves to refills, we are entering the realm of true innovative design enhancing the user experience and hopefully helping a smoother adoption.
- Waste not
- waste has always been just considered waste, and now with new regulations and materials recycling waste has gained value in the market. The Beauty is using a lot of Recycled Content (whether PCR or PIR - understand more here) in their packaging. From plastic waste we are now seeing other types of waste being included in packaging, like fabric waste from the fashion industry, be it denim, leather or else.
- Elevated Luxury
- Following the refill trends, we have found in 2023 that a lot of packaging innovation bring back a sense of luxury. After a move to more sustainable yet simpler solutions, the market is moving into higher luxury while keeping sustainability attributes. Brands and suppliers are now developing items with an artistic elevated design take to confer a more enjoyable and personal experience with packaging rendering it worth keeping and exposing. This is particularly adapted to the luxury and refillable trends, where the host/parent packaging because a keepsake object.
