RecyClass launches certification process for recycled plastics
In line with the PPWR - Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation - which will come into effect as soon as 2030, materials recycling streams will need to be working and "economically viable" to ensure effective circularity of materials in the European supply chain. Creating a certification process will further influence the use of set materials, since traceability can be proven.
Greenwashing is often identified with misleading practices, which are often the result of a lack of information, and not necessarily effective wrongdoing. By ensuring traceability, Recyclass will support the circulation of recycled materials and a better information system throughout. Recycled materials with "food-grade" capacity are also an important factor to use in the beauty industry.
RecyClass has now officially released its Sorting Process Certification, introducing a pioneering framework that meets the input requirements for food-contact recycled plastics in line with Regulation (EU) NΒΊ 2022/1616. Starting in early 2026, sorting centres and downstream waste traders involved in preparing waste for plastic recycling processes will have the opportunity to apply for this certification.
βWith this new addition to our certification schemes, RecyClass is reinforcing trust in the use of recycled materials across the entire plastics value chain,β said Paolo Glerean, Chairman of RecyClass. βBy integrating the Sorting Process, Recycling Process and Recycled Plastics Traceability Certifications, RecyClass has established a comprehensive system that ensures full material traceability β from waste sorting to its incorporation into new products.β β β
The new certification focuses on quality assurance and traceability throughout the sorting process, thereby further boosting transparency in the quality of recycled plastic materials from input to output. A key component of the scheme is its Module Alpha, which outlines additional criteria for sorting facilities handling plastic waste intended for potential food-contact recycling.
Looking ahead, RecyClass will initiate the training process for third-party Certification Bodies to enable the worldwide implementation of the scheme. Sorting operators committed to transparently communicating plastic waste traceability are invited to get certified upon recognition of the first Certification Bodies.
RecyClass is a non-profit, cross-industry initiative advancing recyclability, bringing transparency to the origin of plastic waste, and establishing a harmonised approach toward recycled plastic calculation & traceability in Europe.
