PACKAGING INNOVATIONS -Supply side

Eva Lagarde

In this presentation we will show you the innovations coming from suppliers of beauty solutions.
We will focus on the 3R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) to help you classify the innovations.
Some innovations are more recent than others, and we have selected the one we deem interesting in terms of sustainable development. You may have already seen some or missed them altogether.
Feel free to come back to us if you need more information on the innovations or their suppliers

SCOUTING INNOVATIONS

We’ve been interviewing all our contacts within the beauty industry, attending online press conferences and events, to get you the latest innovations coming from the suppliers of packaging solutions. This is probably not exhaustive, but it covers a lot of ground.

INTRODUCTION

WASTE HIERARCHY

From the most to the least favoured, let’s remember that in the waste hierarchy, the first thing to bear in mind is that “ avoid ”is the first choice for everyone when it comes to sustainability.
It important to go back to basics and consider the use of our products before creating it because the first choice the consumer will make is about “avoiding”it if it’s not necessary.
Not every consumer is eco-conscious even less so an eco-warrior (more about that in our free course), so help them make smarter choices for the planet.

REDUCE - REUSE - RECYCLE - RECOVER/REGENERATE (from waste or towards useful waste)

• REDUCE is an obvious first choice

• REUSE is one of the most adopted technologies within the beauty industry but it’s still challenging in terms of logistics and products safety so it will take time before it’s mainstream.

• RECOVER is the next big trend, where we don’t add waste to the planet, but create products from waste, or create waste that would be used elsewhere or even that will feed our soil. It’s not easy as there are limitative issues to make it “clean” for the environment but it’s not impossible!

01 - REDUCE

HOW TO REDUCE YOUR PACKAGING

There are many ways to REDUCE the environmental impact of your packaging:

  • Reduce energy consumption at sourcing, manufacturing, transportation
  • Reduce material use or source bio-materials
  • Reduce weight of your overall packaging
  • Reduce the thickness of the walls of your bottle, jar, box or else
  • Remove Labels, inner parts or extra packaging
  • Use packaging with multi functionalities: holder, brand leaflet engraved inside paperboard

REDUCED AIRLESS PACKAGING

The DEA range (DEA - Developing the Evolution of Airless) has no internal plastic container, making it the first airless system in which the filled product is directly in contact with its glass container. The DEA series represents a more sustainable solution with primary packaging in glass, using fewer components and reducing the amount of overall materials, resulting in a lighter and more functional packaging.
Available in three nominal capacities: 15ml, 30ml and 50ml. Its standard GPI 18/400 neck finish, combined with the airless system, is compatible with a vast range of pumps.
The range also allows to eliminate lubricant use, thanks to the smoothness of the piston inside the glass container.
